Prepare for the Job Interview
The interview is really a 'sales presentation' with you as the
product. List the likely questions that you will be asked and how
you will answer them. Understand your personal qualities and the
benefits you will offer your employer. Know the company. When you
first meet the interviewer, be polite, shake hands, smile and look
them in the eye. Be confident in your posture and voice.
What will they be looking for?
When applying for a job you should be aware of a few simple
strategies employers use to choose the best candidates.
- Relevant skills and experience - any previous work experience, including full time, part time or in a volunteer capacity
- Networking - indicates a 'can-do' attitude particularly if you approach the business directly for a job
- Presentation - neatly attired and professional, polite and on time for the interview
- Well prepared - you have researched the business and understand their needs
- A plan - you know what you want and how the job can kick-start your career
Prepare your 30 second Commercial
It can it be hard to respond to the simple question "Tell me
about yourself"? However, this request carries a lot of
weight and your response can actually determine if you get the
job.
Be prepared:
This as an excellent opportunity to sell yourself in a poised,
polished and professional manner and make a memorable
connection.
Your script should concisely state who you are, what you do, what
you have to offer (i.e., skills, experience, accomplishments etc.),
what you are seeking (i.e., career goals), and how you can be of
assistance to the employer.
Tips:
- Practice until it sounds natural and effortless, but not memorised.
- Create more than one version with varying lengths (30, 60 and 120 seconds).
- Speak slowly and clearly.
- Keep it simple and professional.
- Be prepared to elaborate or provide examples of accomplishments.
- Let your personality shine through.
- Vary the conclusion to meet different scenarios.
